A new study of more than 8,000 people who had heartburn and symptoms of GERD was halted by the Food and Drug Administration after a panel of experts voted that the condition should be treated with a prescription for the treatment of GERD. That decision was made in a meeting in February.

The medication, called Nexium, was approved for use by the Food and Drug Administration in 1999 as an oral drug to treat heartburn. The drug was the last of four prescription drugs for heartburn in adults and was approved to treat GERD in 2001.
The study was halted in a meeting in March after experts voiced concerns that there was an increased risk of heartburn. The FDA had also warned against the drug until May of this year.
The FDA is now investigating whether the study was flawed. If so, it could have led to the death of a patient.
“This study is one of many that is halted for fear that it could lead to serious harm,” said Dr. Sidney Wolfe, director of the Public Citizen Health Research Group. “This is a critical study for the public and we have a great many doctors who will not let this cause their patients harm.”
Dr. Andrew Wiles, director of the FDA’s Office of Dietary and Health Products, said that the FDA had not issued a decision in the case of the study. But he acknowledged that a new study is needed.
“There is no single randomized, controlled trial that has shown the efficacy of Nexium for heartburn,” he said. “A randomized trial would be necessary to determine whether this medication is effective for heartburn.”
James O’Connor, director of the Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, said that the study was based on a randomized clinical trial.
O’Connor said that he had no comment on the new study.
But the FDA has a number of concerns over the drug. The company has said the study was flawed because of data about heartburn that was not reported by the FDA.
Mark Kline, who is director of the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research’s Center for Evaluation of GERD, said that the FDA had a number of concerns about the study. He said that if the study was flawed, the FDA should have issued a warning in response to the study.
“This study is one of many that is halted for fear that it could lead to serious harm,” Kline said.
The FDA is conducting a review of the drug, which is the second of its kind to prevent heartburn. The drug is available in a generic form and can be bought at a discount in the United States.
The study is being conducted to evaluate the efficacy of Nexium for heartburn. It is expected to begin in July.
